The Eyes of Eternity
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Not that I’ve ever had the joy of trying, for I’ve never— not for the last million years— heard a scream within atmospheric bounds either. For my fellow lifelings and I stopped screaming years ago, for screams are a sign of fear, and fear was eradicated back in far distant millennia. Fear was the first of all feelings, established in our primeval minds upon some primordial stone, and therefore first to go. But tears remained, and flourished. So yes, I have heard men cry, in that void of infinite expanse, swept with agony and despondence at the loneliness of such an empty spread of time.

Inhuman
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. That is why they had built the Human Abattoir Space Station, HASS. The five kilometre wide rotating disc of titanium, Kevlar and high grade steel, orbiting the earth. At the focus of the disc was the singularity, which was encased in the gravitational suppressor, a five hundred metre deep layer of Osmium. The Osmium reduced the strength of the singularity’s gravitational pull to close to that of Earth’s. The Osmium allowed the residents to ambulate the perimeter of the disc and maintain their muscularity, rather that atrophying in zero gravity. The residents speculated on the origin of the singularity, its purpose, and what would happen if you ever approached it. Many fantasised that it connected their universe to one that housed the so called ‘New Moon’ - a planet habitable to humans, teaming with plant-life unscoured by the evil of man. James was under no illusion that the singularity would atomise you before you got the chance to even perceive it. Despite the complex engineering of the osmium layer, the remainder of the living quarters, or cells, were rudimentary at best. The cells were a tessalation of hexagons, two metres wide, with a single mattress, sink and toilet. The tessalate housed over one-hundred-thousand residents. The female and male cells were separated by a militarised zone. There was a training field one hundred metres wide, where the residents spent the entirety of their free time. The slaughter-room’s location was unknown, but its existence definite. The screams were a constant reminder of that. The men knew the date that they would walk to the slaughter-room - on their eighteenth birthday. For women it would be after their third child.

So, tell me: Why is it when you are put into a worst-case scenario, rock bottom is still two or three feet below that. Yet still, manages to come and bite you. Being face to face with this creature, gave me enough to question if the bottom had been hit yet.

Yes, I know that’s not actually it. I just needed a better hook than that lame pen vs sword thing. Oh shit, there I go, my mind getting way off course. This thought to text technology is still so difficult for me, as a person whose mind always seems to be going a million miles a minute. Fuck, I’m doing it again… Ok, let’s start over.

Blue Shadows
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Sound had to have air to travel, that was the science behind it. However Louise felt a chill run through her while she was on her walk. She couldn’t tell if it was a true scream or just her imagination. She had just watched an old horror film recently. She looked out the vast windows at the small blue sphere that lay beyond the horizon. The Earth was setting and she would have to return to her family’s cabin soon. All of the lunar colonies had been originally inhabited by single scientists and astronauts here for research so that eventually more Earth born dwellers could join. The Selene colony was first, designed for testing how to mimic the atmospheric conditions of Earth while still maintaining the level of gravity the moon did. Jericho was the colony that tested the long term effect of life in a lessened gravity environment. Such things as whether or not children would survive in the colony, or if they could even be conceived. There were huge ethical hoops to jump through as part of that establishment, which made it one of the last colonies to be tested. Once it was determined after years of research and volunteer missions, the moon was deemed fit for human habitation.

The Place Where Nothing Grows
1: smooth sailing Nobody can hear you scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. He couldn’t know for sure. Seeing his reflection against safety glass, Apollo wondered what would happen to him if his tether should break loose on a “walk” if his transponder died. He would skim an ocean of stars between him and a single solid footfall. Frankly, it didn’t sound all that bad until he saw his breath fogging up the two-inch barrier between him and that ultimate nothingness. Weightless or not, he’d still need oxygen. Once his tanks ran out, he’d breathe in his own exhaust. He couldn’t scream if he wanted to. His world would go foggy. Blood vessels would swell in his temples until he couldn’t think, until even the lights burning all around him couldn’t keep out the dark. He didn’t want to think about that now. He was here for the duration. He had an idea how long that was, but deployments had a funny way of stretching out. Just how long he’d be there was someone else’s decision.

The Great Nothing
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. Anyone else may find traveling through such a void horrifying, yet it’s all I can think about. Naturally, I mean the Great Nothing, 700 million light-years away. The observable universe is so large, but no area has fewer galaxies than that dark, desolate place. It’s practically an anomaly. Shrouded in mystery.
