The Evolution of Pumpkin Carving
History of the Halloween Pumpkin and Pumpkin Carving Ideas Origins of the Halloween Pumpkin Tradition The tradition of carving faces on vegetables as a way to ward off evil spirits has its roots in Ireland and Scotland. These Celtic regions have a long history of celebrating Samhain, a festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. People believed that on the night of Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead blurred, allowing spirits to roam the Earth. To protect themselves, they carved scary faces into turnips and other vegetables, lit them with candles, and placed them outside their homes to ward off malevolent spirits.

Some of the Most Commonly Researched Questions and The Answers

There is no one answer that will satisfy everyone, but some possible answers include: to find happiness and fulfillment, to make a difference in the world, to learn and grow as a person, and to connect with something larger than oneself.

Lost in the Hedge Maze. Content Warning.
Octavia sat bored on her bed, staring at her phone. She was scrolling through social media but not really seeing anything. It was just a visual distraction and something to fool herself into thinking that she was doing something. Mostly, she was repeating the same question in her head over and over again… why did he cheat on her with that girl? Her of all people! It was bad enough that he cheated on her, but to do it with the one girl that had made her life a living hell for the last year, was just evil on another level.

The Living Arc Angels part 5. Content Warning.
(“NARRATED”) The angels walked in silence through the streets paying little attention to the chaos that surrounded them. Everyone’s thoughts, most of all Tyler and Andrea’s, were on the innocent child that had been in their arms only a few hours ago. For a moment Andrea looked up and gazed in front of them. There in the road dressed in black jeans; black shirt; and a long black jacket, his face hidden by his hood, stood a man. His head facing toward the ground but it was obvious he was looking in their direction. “Guys, I think we may have trouble heading our way.” She couldn’t see his face, but she could feel his eyes on her. Looking just behind the dark figure she could see a teenage boy slowly approaching him from behind. Just then she saw the boy’s hand in the air holding a bat. She began to scream out a warning, but before she could the mysterious man had already turned toward the boy. Nothing could be seen but a burst of blood and the sudden blank expression upon the young boy’s face.

The Living Arc Angels Part 4. Content Warning.
(“NARRATED”) Andrea awoke early and rushed quickly to the bathroom. She flung open the door and dropped to her knees so hard she slid the rest of the way to the toilet. The feeling of losing her lunch was so intense she was forced to hold onto the tub with one hand to support herself. Concerned when he heard her throwing up, Tyler came to the bathroom and stood in the doorway. “Honey, what’s wrong?” She was unable to stop her current state long enough to answer him though. “I didn’t think that angels could get sick.” Suddenly, Andrea let out a bellowing groan and once again threw up. Only this Time the familiar bright white light shown between her hand and the tub she was holding on to. Tyler raised one eyebrow at that hand and calmly said, “Oh shit. This is going to hurt.” Seconds after the words escaped him, he was blown back across the hall and against the far wall, as the tub along with half the bathroom exploded.

Living Arc Angels part 3. Content Warning.
(“NARRATED”) They called the boys back into the room. Once they heard them stomping Christine yelled, “What do you two want for breakfast?” The only responses were a shrug and one “I don’t know.” Not much help exactly. So, they just figured they’d eat whatever was fixed. The four adults began to set about the task of trying to make something to eat, which wasn’t too easy since they had no idea where anything was. They split into teams. Eric and Tyler started looking for all the utensils needed, and the girls started looking for the food, yelling out what they had found so that the guys would know what they were after. They managed to scramble up eggs, bacon, and milk. As they all did their part in the cooking, the boys played in the living room. Tyler, Eric, Andrea, and Christine made sure to look in on them every so often. After all, they were young boys and liable to get into anything they could. The four of them began singing, partly to help the time pass and partly because they were just generally happy to be there.

The Living Arc Angels Part 2. Content Warning.
(TYLER’S POINT OF VIEW) In the alley behind the Italian restaurant a white light appeared in swirling circles. Out of it stepped the four living arc angels. I wasn’t sure what that meant, but that was what Thomas had called us. We were once again back on earth. We stood together a moment in silence. Then the silence was broken as Eric yelled, “Whoa! Guess what?” Our attention quickly turned to him with interest not knowing what could have caused such an outburst. He looked back at us a moment and then with obvious embarrassment said, “I’m hungry. I just never thought I’d be hungry again.” A roaring laughter filled the alley. “Well, I would love to taste food again. After all, it’s been 3 years since the last time I ate.” I didn’t wait for anyone else to respond. I held tight to Andrea’s hand and started toward the end of the alley. Eric and Christine quickly followed. Andrea jokingly said, “Maybe that’s why they brought us back behind an Italian restaurant.” Once again we all shared in much needed laughter as we rounded the corner and headed toward the side door. Then after several more steps we were walking through the door, stopping just behind the register and waiting to be seated. Promptly, a waitress came up and asks us where we would like to sit. Christine said, “it doesn’t matter… we’re just glad to be here.” The waitress looked a little baffled by the reply but still grabbed a few menus and then headed off to show us to a seat. Eagerly we followed her toward the front of the restaurant. Finally the waitress stopped in front of a table that rested against the windows that made up the front wall. From here you could see the cars moving back and forth on the road that ran adjacent to the front of the establishment. To most this would have been an annoyance, however it had been a little while since any of us had seen any roads even with out any cars to be on them, so it was a new wonder to rediscover to us. So happily we sat down. Andrea slid into the booth on the left side and I slid in after her, and Christine slid into the booth on the right side followed by Eric.
