Somers 7A Girls Tuskers Win Tri-County Basketball League
The Somers 7A Girls Tuskers basketball team could attribute its up and down season to not having key players available at a number of games. But the resulting 7-7 finish had an upside for the 4th place finishers once the playoffs came around. “It forced the bench players to step up and gave them confidence. So when the tournament began, we knew we had a team that would give any of the top teams trouble,” said Coach Robert Hawkins. He turned out to be right on the mark.

Every time a business closes in a downtown Westchester area, part of the soul of the said city escapes into oblivion. Even more so when its replacement operates in accordance with Wall Street rather than the pulse of the community. In turn, with ever-rising rents and all the financial upheaval, says Mt. Kisco small business owner Selamawit Tesfaye, "Now, there's a bank on every corner." But that doesn't mean Mt. Kisco hasn't held its own against the big boxes, and Tesfaye is doing her part to keep distinctiveness alive on her corner.

Somers Wins Section One Title With Thrilling 1-0 Victory Over Pearl River
On Saturday afternoon, the third seeded Somers Tuskers took to neutral ground at Lakeland High School for the Section One, Class A Soccer Final versus the top seeded Pearl River Pirates. Eighty six minutes passed before either side gave any ground as each team thrilled on equal footing. But it would be the Tuskers who literally put their heads together and got the game’s only leg.

What’s so wrong with Waterworld. Kevin Costner and Dennis Hopper battling it out to gain a foot hold in this post environmental apocalypse at sea. Yeah, I like the 1995 action adventure with an environmental conscience, and it’s unfortunate that critics allow factors outside the movie screen to affect their judgment.

Joseph Holland of Somers Keeps Perseverance in the Family
A 125 pound Pop Warner Football player probably feels pretty good about his chances on the gridiron. But when a league weight limit is leveled and permanently sidelines that youngster from participating, hopefully the disappointment is managed into an enduring life lesson. The school-aged child was Somers' Joe Holland and becoming an Academic All-American at Cornell, graduating Harvard Law School and having numerous professional successes shows that the right man was definitely in his corner.

Somers Cruises to 49-17 Victory on Five Messiah Horne Touchdowns
The four touchdowns Matt Pires scored two weeks ago against Sleepy Hollow looked liked something the Tuskers would never see on their turf again. But Messiah Horne didn't wait long to best Pires' four score, and John Jay fell well short on the sevens in the Tuskers 49-17 rout on Friday Night.

Somers Girls Get a Lesson in Life and Basketball 101 at Fordham University
Click for Somers Football Photos vs Eastchester On Saturday, the Somers 5th Grade Girls Basketball team got the chance to show their game at a decidedly larger stage than the Intermediate School. The Tuskers faced off against Harrison during halftime of the Fordham, Virginia Commonwealth women’s basketball game. Still, 10-year-old Eva Rodgers didn’t let the big stage confuse the basketball bottom line as she warmed up. “It’s the same game—just in front of more people,” said Eva. But Somers Girls Commissioner Dom Giudice didn’t see the setting creating as much focus for the girls as the one on one they would get inside the Fordham locker room.

Katonah Doctor Offering Medical Marijuana Consultations in Mt. Kisco
You don’t have to wait long on late night TV for some comedian to take shots at the idea of people using marijuana for medical purposes. Dr. Lynn Parodneck, whose private practice in Mt. Kisco is now offering marijuana consultations, has no problem joining in lightheartedly. “The jokes are funny,” she freely admits. But she hasn’t taken up the cause to be part of a national punchline. The closure of St Vincent's in Manhattan gave her the impetus to leave behind her gynecological practice and take the opportunity to help people who are suffering.
