The Dominant Child. Honorable Mention in Parallel Lives Challenge.
Though Amethyst was eleven, she was still afraid of the dark, and it was from the dark that the other girl seemed to come. On a long summer night like many others, Amy lay in bed curled up and sniffling. The more she tried not to think about the terrible things she was sure the darkness harbored just out of her sight, the more real they became: hunched, gnarled shapes bathing her neck in their subtle, hungry breath, monsters waiting for her to give one inch, twitch one muscle, their dark-furred or scaly limbs coiled, ready to pounce. She was an only child, and was thus used to weathering the foolishness of childhood alone and unvalidated.

Making A House A Home. Second Place in I Wrote This Challenge.
‘It looks like a model house’ my mother would joke with more than a tinge of jealousy when we visited friends who kept their place so clean and clutter-free it seemed unlived in. “It’s almost eerie.”

Do Not Go Gentle
"Do not go gentle into that good night (. . .) Rage, rage against the dying of the light." - Dylan Thomas I was in the kitchen of a B&B in Ireland when I heard that Robin Williams had died. The news was such a tragic shock to me- Robin had been a part of many beloved pieces of entertainment from my years growing up in the 90’s and early 00's. He was an institution, known in the public for both his incredible comic talent and his unique kindness in his pursuits like entertaining troops overseas or sitting by the hospital beds of young people inspiring them to go on. For my three younger siblings and I, it felt a little like hearing someone we'd known and loved in our childhood had died.

My Personhood is Not Political. Runner-Up in Pride Under Pressure Challenge.
I came out of the closet as nonbinary for the first time to my best friend, then to my parents. Shortly after, I came out again, to my sister. Then to my other siblings. And I’m still coming out, on a regular basis, to this day.

Waking Dream
Lars woke to the sun streaming onto his face. For a while he simply lay in bed, his mattress conforming to his body like a hug, watching the light catch in the crystals of the chandelier above him. The ocean outside was the most vibrant blue. It was another beautiful day.

God Is Dead And I Feel Fine. Honorable Mention in Maps of the Self Challenge.
If the title & subtitle combined didn't make you think of at least one of two absolute bops by REM, I have already failed. When I was a kid, I brought up the Santa Claus issue with my mother. I'd really been mulling the whole thing over and decided it didn't make sense for numerous reasons. How on earth was this fat guy booking it down everyone's chimney every night? Why did his writing look suspiciously like the all-caps style my father wrote with in his office? I'd done my research and come to a conclusion: Santa was probably not real.
