But in May of ’82, I boarded a plane that flew from Buffalo, New York to Los Angeles, California. Then, I flew from LA to Tokyo, Japan. My father, who had traveled during his time in the USAF, told me not to — under any circumstances — leave the airport. I called my dad and mom when I was on the ground in LA, in the airport. And then, I left the concourse and proceeded to board a bus, blatantly disregarding his advice.

Engine failure My boat’s gearbox had failed off Haiti while on passage from Cuba to the British Virgin Islands. There had been little wind overnight so couldn’t sail. We’d been making about 5 knots under engine when the gearbox gave up its ghost at about 05:00 hours. For several reasons Haiti was not a viable option for us to head for and we were becalmed for most of the day about 12 miles south of Île à Vache.

After calculating the costs of taking some time off work (not everyone gets paid for vacation time), then prepping for travel like buying travel gear, getting the proper vaccinations, paying for visa fees, etc., then researching and budgeting for flights, accommodation, travel insurance, entertainment, food and even the Uber ride to the airport can quickly add up to be extremely costly; and you haven’t even left the country yet!

Discovering Brothels, Bordellos and Burdels
Some years ago I spent a couple of winters in Sicily, living on my boat in the dock at Marina de Ragusa. It’s a wonderful Island with great wine and pizzas to die for. Just up the road is the old city of Ragusa which is a World Heritage Site. There’s plenty of other history too with amazing Roman ruins, at Agrigento for example. Then there’s an active volcano, Mt. Etna if you fancy visiting a boiling crater.
