PRIDE in a Small Town
I haven’t lived there in more than 32 years, but today I am so very PROUD to share the PRIDE that I have in my hometown of St. Johns, Michigan. This weekend, the small, rural, Midwestern, agricultural town where I grew up (population 7920,) hosted their second annual PRIDEFEST!

Logos are not enough
Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s great that many companies have felt compelled to acknowledge that the LGBTQIA+ community exists at all. It is encouraging that it even happens. In fact, that was where I started in my own thinking about acknowledging pride month. Let’s make a logo and be visibly supportive of our fellow humans, but the more we discussed it, the more I realized it wasn’t really the kind of contribution that I wanted to make. It’s too easy. It’s too little. It’s not about colorful logos gracing email signatures for one month out of the year. This is more important. It’s about fostering a culture that acknowledges that our differences are our strengths, our similarities are catalysts, and keeping our focus on what matters for the task at hand.

What's In A Name?
Josey isn't my birth name. Sometimes it confuses people, why did I change it? What's wrong with the name I had? People from my past have a hard time adjusting to the name change and using it for themselves. Sometimes they slip, but for the most part, everyone tries, even if they don't quite understand WHY. I spent most of my life under a different name, and my adult life under a nickname that would become my new first name. I get how it can be a difficult adjustment, but I also try to be open about why when people get critical.

A Gender-neutral Graduation Includes Everyone!. Top Story - June 2022.
I first spied him carrying chairs across the lawn to the area where the tables and food were being set up for the graduation party. He was dressed like a typical Midwestern teenage boy: jeans, t-shirt, Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, a trucker cap atop his buzz cut, and a loose-fitting tee that didn’t do much to hide the fact that his chest was tightly bound underneath. If I had to guess, I would bet that he was using a combination of ace bandage, plus a smaller, tighter tank beneath his clothing. I shuddered to myself, imagining the physical discomfort, especially on that particularly balmy June afternoon. Not to mention any emotional or psychological discomfort that they experienced as a trans teen in small town, USA. I thought all this to myself, as it was certainly none of my business. Still, I often find myself casually keeping an eye out for queer and BIPOC kids when I’m visiting areas that are traditionally conservative.

My Experience With Being Queer and Trans
Until recently I've always had a hard time with understanding and feeling included in romance. The idea of a romantic relationship was appealing but I could never understand the difference between a romantic relationship and friendship. I have a very complicated relationship with romance and now I can finally understand the reason. I'm grayromantic, which is on the romantic spectrum. I rarely feel romantic attraction and when I do it's confusing and hard to explain, that's the simple way to explain my attraction towards people.
