The Banned Book Teacher
I don’t remember your name, but I remember every lesson that you taught me. When I was young, I LOVED to write, and I took a notebook and pencil around pretty much everywhere with me. My life at home wasn’t always sweet as apple pie, and by the time I got around to high school I probably had a few more issues than I cared to admit. Adults didn’t like me because I had an “attitude” and other people my age had no interest in me because I was kind of a loner. Throughout my childhood I had moved around a lot, and I never had a group of friends that I grew up with. Suddenly, I found myself in the middle of a community where many of my peers had known each other since kindergarten. To say that I felt like an outsider would be putting it mildly.

My hometown heroes are the teachers that raised me. The teachers that dragged me through the most difficult years of my life. The teachers that realised that underneath my arrogant unfeeling exterior was a traumatised, insecure, scared little boy. The teachers that gave me second, third, fourth and fifth chances. The teachers that were understanding of my ADHD, my depressive tendencies, of my generic emotional overwhelm. The ones that saw my frustration with life and didn’t shame me or punish me for any of it, but tried to help me figure out ways to succeed instead.

To Hold Your Dreams Close
I don't allow myself to reveal my dreams to very many people. I like to keep them close, nurturing them, hoping that they will come to fruition. Maybe it’s because I don’t want to set high expectations, I already do that too much in my own mind; I don’t need the same nagging external feeling that I’m not doing enough. Maybe it’s because I don’t like being vulnerable with people I can’t trust. Maybe, I like to hold my dreams as secrets. So that when I achieve them, I will be happy for myself. I don’t need outside praise or approval, I can find it within.
