Hidden Amongst the Cattails
The words of a nearly one-month-old newspaper headline screamed across the page, its bold letters seething with anger. “Prominent St. James figure accused of sexual abuse: former alter boys speak out on allegations from decades past!” A picture of my younger brother John smiled from underneath it. I just stared down at it as I felt a nauseous feeling twinge in my stomach. I slid the top newspaper off the pile and saw another headline just like it. “Prominent town figure also led Boy Scout troop: former members allege abuse there as well.” I slid that paper off to the side too.

The Empty Room
I couldn’t believe that it was finally happening. After 28 years, my family and I were moving out of my childhood home. I sat on the floor of my old bedroom, taking it all in. The big window. The pink carpet and walls. All the empty space. It seemed even bigger than I ever realized. It was weird to think I’d never seen my room like this before.

Memoirs of A Vampire: A Background
Author's Note: The idea came to me while it was raining. I was on a bus, heading back to my home province after completing an undergraduate assessment exam for university. As I gazed out of the window, a vision formed in my mind—a hunter, a vampire in pursuit of their prey. Their intent was not to kill, but rather to proposition "clean" humans to become their blood donors. It was the late '90s, and the world was still grappling with the aftermath of the AIDS epidemic. For this particular, discerning vampire, locating a human with untainted blood proved to be a formidable challenge. Ultimately, they settled on a human male who was drowning his sorrows at a bar, having recently been left heartbroken by a high school sweetheart.

Weaving the Canadian Mosaic: Living the dream
Kat sensed the environment as if she was a feral beast. In the stillness she heard her heartbeat, then the leaves rustling. They sounded the drum roll for a chorus of crickets chirping. The chorus adjusted their rhythm as the echoes of an occasional car or airplane passed in the distance. The chant of nature recreated the history of the land. She was a part of nature. She stood as an outsider, on the mast of the ship of Theseus who asked if a ship that is restored, with all the wooden parts replaced, is the same ship. Heraclitus asked if a river, whose water is replenished, is the same river. Plutarch stated you never step twice into the same river.
