Bethan's question is met with silence. For a minute, she thinks that she has been left and she feels a stab of fear that Dave could come to any minute and finish her off. If he is able to. She's not sure which eventuality she is more scared of.

Contemplation
Bethan tried to still her shaking hands. Dave stared off, meditatively, still. He was right on the edge. Dave It all comes back to here. I should've known that it would catch up with me eventually. But so many years passed and the veil was never lifted...

The Vanishing Queen: The First Chronicle
The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. Pandemonium ensued. "It is an ill omen!" the people cried, wailing and wringing their hands in fear. And quite rightly, as never mind the superstitious implications of sinister powers at work and things being awry in the world, made manifest in nature's reversal, the river's flow change posed problems, as it was a practical nightmare.

Arrival
"I had no idea this was here," Bethan says in wonder. "No," Dave says. He likes this space, liked this space. Now, it's going to hold memories of too many bad things. He won't want to come back much in future. He is scanning the area to see if anyone else is here but it is just them, him and Bethan.

Accusation. Top Story - November 2024.

Rachel Reviews: At a Time Like This by Catherine Dunne
I really enjoyed the storytelling of Catherine Dunne. This was a straightforward read which examines the relationships between four friends across the years and how their experiences, both shared and otherwise, shape their lives. However, whilst Georgie, Maggie, Claire and Nora seem like a tight-knit group (with the exception maybe of Nora, who is always a little of an outlier), there are secrets that are kept despite their closeness and the book is about whether you ever really know someone as well as you think you do.

Denial
Dave's immediate response: to deny. "I don't know what you're talking about." Dave continued to walk ahead. "Stop." Bethan was behind him and he was tempted to continue but he did as he was asked. He composed his face as she came level with him. She stood directly in front of him and scrutinised him.
