The Mystery And The Madness
A poem by Jason Morton

Beneath sharp and alluring skies
Amid the spoils of societies many misteps
Lost in the ravages of the speeding that is time
Rests the heart of all that has ever mattered
---
Secreted away in the world of mysteries abundant
Hidden from the boring eyes of the greedy
Always lying just beneath the surface of what is and was
For only some may know its luster
---
And yet for many it is the unsung treasure
A thing not seen but hunted to the ends of the Earth
Go beyond their limits to attain its migthy splendor
And appreciate it not once it is found
---
But for some, it's found, and then lost just as fast
Like the sanity of the ill in some remotely hidden padded room
Held on such a pedestal it always has been
But never understood until it has absconded from view
---
What is it
Why since the dawn of time has it been sought
Forget all that ye may expect once that door is pulled
For it is but a curse upon even the strongest souls
---
Tis the season of mystery as it comes upon you
And one that will never make dammed bits of sense
Always probematic in its existence
Since the first to be infected by its raw essence
---
Yet, all who breathe the air and marvel at the seas
Search for it in their tiny world of normal
From that first moment they quake and quiver in the knees
They know not the pangs of what they've brought onto thee
---
For it is now that their very soul belongs to another
They have found the greatest source of unnatural pain
