Slippery Slopes

Mind how you walk

Slippery Slopes

It begins small,

just a slight shift,

a step that does not feel as firm

as the one before it.

You tell yourself it is nothing,

just a moment, just a phase,

something underneath already changed,

something you cannot see

has started to move.

The ground looks the same,

but it does not hold the same,

there is a quiet slide to everything now,

a lack of grip you cannot explain.

I try to steady myself,

but my thoughts move with it,

slipping from one place to another

without warning,

without reason.

There is no anchor here,

no solid point to return to,

just this constant adjustment

to something that keeps shifting.

And the worst part is

no one else seems to notice,

they walk as if everything is stable,

as if I am the only one

losing footing.

Slippery slopes do not break loudly,

they do not announce the fall,

they take you slowly,

quietly,

until you realise you are already too far gone.

I've had my share of "slopes" and wish I could have put two-sided tape on them, but only when that knowledge was too late. Now, while others have forgotten, I remember my mistakes.
