Oh My Child, Come Back to Me

Cot death a horrible thing for any mother to face

Oh My Child, Come Back to Me

The cradle’s still, the room is bare,

She rocks alone in empty air,

Her arms reach out to hold the past,

But shadows slip away too fast.

Her voice is hoarse from crying out,

Each whispered prayer, each shattered shout,

Her husband stands but cannot mend

The hollow place that will not end.

She speaks to walls, she sings to night,

She dreams of cribs and lullabies,

The world turns grey, the mirrors break,

Her mind bends under so much ache.

“Oh my child, come back to me,”

She pleads to skies, to wind, to sea,

But silence clings to every wall,

And no small feet return her call.

A sad and unstoppable death

Took her tiny baby’s last silent breath,

She prays to God to hold Jessy tight,

Till her life is done too, one tearful night
