A Barbigerous Bastard

For Penny's Part B: The A-Z of Unusual Words Challenge

By Dana CrandellPublished 2 years ago Updated 2 years ago 1 min read

barbigerous: bearded; bearing a beard

My Connection: I worked for a decade in an environment where I wasn't allowed to have facial hair, because of the need to wear breathing apparatus when toxic gas was released. Traditionally, the men who left that environment grew beards in celebration. That's how mine originated. Today, I wear it for a very different reason.

My poem:

A barbigerous bastard am I

(Figuratively – no reason to cry.)

I do know who sired me (and how)

Though he's been gone many years now.

*

But I shall not digress! There's a reason

I wear this beard through every season.

Though tradition first brought it to being,

It's now about what you're not seeing.

*

I was tempted one day and removed it,

Because, as you know, I'm a half-wit.

The result was traumatic and jarring

And left some emotional scarring.

*

At some time, while I'd covered my face

And old man's had taken its place!

This is very consistent with what I know as well in some professions I have been in or by friends. Once the job with masks is gone, on come the beards!

hahahaha! This is awesome, Dana! Love it! Your range of writing skill is amazing— you can pen the most gorgeous and evocative poetry, and also draw out the biggest belly laughs with your wit and humor. A good writer, indeed. Curious what your "toxic gas" job was. I love the beard, btw!

'Sup, d-bro ~ You're as white as me and my Twin Bro; how distinguished. But, I reckon anyone that can hook-um with a box of 'Triscuits' has to be a good "Old-Salt..!" j-bro

As a come-and-go barbigerous person myself, I can relate. The best part of the beard is the chin you seem to have after it's grown.

Ha, so true...I started mine while on a guys trip and just didn't feel like shaving it's been that way in one form or another but I haven't been clean shaven since 2019. Now I scared to see what's under there.
