By Valeriya WinchesterPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

Now with the COVID-19 outbreak, many people are spending more time at home. While working from home, playing with your kids or cleaning the house, you may notice unwanted visitors. It is very important to make your home safe and comfortable during these difficult times and pests should never belong in your property.

Professional pest control companies, like Archers Pest Control, are open during the coronavirus outbreak. Although, it is understandable if you want to try to get rid of pests on your own. No matter if you are dealing with bed bugs or other pests, there are several things you can do to get rid of annoying pests.

How to Get Rid of Unwanted Pests

Keeping a good level of hygiene in your home

This is very important when it comes to your kitchen or bathroom. Pests such as rodents and crawling insects are in your home looking for water and food. If they can find crumbs and damp spots in your kitchen, they will set up immediately. Make sure your food is stored in plastic containers. Regularly empty the trash bin to avoid pests infestation.

Keeping your garden tidy

Insects love to hide in plants and compost bins. Ensure that the waste bins are placed away from your home. It is also important to remove any standing water from your garden because often they can be breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other pests.

Sealing Cracks and Openings|

Inspect your home for any cracks or openings. There is a high chance that pests such as rodents are entering your home through cracks by your doors and windows. If you find any holes seal them.

DIY Methods

Once your home is cleaned and sealed, you can try different DIY methods to prevent pest infestation.

Peppermint oil- Peppermint oil is a well known DIY method against many different insects like spiders, ants and cockroaches. Mix 10 drops of peppermint oil into 200 ml of water and after spray it around your house. Rodents also hate the peppermint scent so you can use it against them.

Lavender- Dried lavender repels moths, flies, fleas and mosquitoes. You can place dried lavender in your wardrobe or use spray mixture - similar to peppermint mixture around your home.

Coffee- Cockroaches and ants don't like coffee as much as we do. As a matter of fact, coffee can be deadly for them. Place coffee grounds in spots where you have seen roaches or ants.

Boric Acid- Dissolve one tablespoon boric acid and 5 or 6 tablespoons of sugar in two cups of water. After that soak a few cotton balls in the solution and place them into a jar. Place the jar where ants have been seen. Do not forget to replenish the liquid when it's dry until the ants are gone.

Coconut Oil and Vinegar- Coconut oil and white vinegar combination is also a good method to get rid of unwanted pests such as spiders. As oils may cause spots, first test the mixture on a small, hidden area of your carpet or furniture.

Eucalyptus Oil- Apply eucalyptus oil to a cloth or cotton ball and leave it in an area infested by flies.

Sweet Basil- Placing a small container of sweet basil and clover will discourage flies from entering your kitchen.

Peanut butter & Boric Acid - Mix one cup of peanut butter and ½ cup of boric acid and after that make small half- inch balls and place them near the entry points of the rodents. These balls are extremely toxic for rats and mice.

Ultrasonic devices- The sound device emits a high - frequency sound which can be very unpleasant for rats and mice. When rodents hear this sound, they will run away from your home. Luckily humans can't hear the sound, so it won't bother you or your family.
