Beyond 6 Seconds Podcast

The American Enterprise Institute estimates that approximately 15% to 20% of the U.S. population is estimated to be neurodivergent. This represents a significant portion of Americans - potentially one in five - who identify with conditions such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or other cognitive differences. Some studies specifically show that about 19% of Americans identify as neurodivergent. And, no, it's not due to vaccines or Red Dye 4.

Beyond 6 Seconds is an award-winning podcast hosted by Carolyn Kiel that features candid, in-depth interviews with neurodivergent entrepreneurs, creatives, and advocates. It highlights their personal stories, challenges, and successes to shatter misconceptions and celebrate the diversity of the neurodivergent community.

 It showcases the lives and stories of people with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and other neurodivergent identities.

The podcast aims to break stigmas and showcase the "vibrance of neurodiversity." Host Carolyn Kiel, an experienced instructional designer and advocate, hosts the show. The title refers to moving past the quick, 6-second first impressions (such as in job interviews) to really understand a person's story.

Host Carolyn Kiel interviews neurodivergent entrepreneurs, creators, and advocates about their lives, identities, and passions. From around the world, more than 100 guests have shared their first-person experiences with autism, dyslexia, ADHD, Tourette Syndrome, Down Syndrome, schizophrenia, and more. Their stories shatter misconceptions, break stigma, and showcase the vibrancy of neurodiversity.

The podcast's name, Beyond 6 Seconds, was inspired by a statistic Carolyn heard: recruiters only look at a resume for about 6 seconds to judge an applicant's potential fit for a job. While that statistic may or may not be accurate, it inspired Carolyn to go beyond 6-second first impressions on her podcast to give people time and space to share their stories without judgment.

The show is a Signal Award Gold Winner (2023) and a winner of multiple Positive Change Podcast Awards (2022)and has released more than 200 episodes. Most recently, it was nominated for the 2026 NYC Podcast Awards and was a first-place winner at the 2025 Women Who Podcast Awards. Beyond 6 Seconds is a top 1.5% globally ranked podcast on Listen Notes and has been listened to in 50+ countries.

One of my favorite episodes is the March 23rd show with Sania Khimji, who is an accomplished artist, model, influencer, and international beauty pageant winner based in India who continues to redefine boundaries and inspire inclusivity in every space she enters. Living with Down syndrome, Sania celebrates her uniqueness as just one part of her powerful story that's rooted in creativity, confidence, and courage.

Through her art, modeling, and advocacy, Sania continues to shine as a global voice for empowerment - showing the world that when you lead with passion, purpose, and pride, there are truly no limits to what you can achieve.

Host Carolyn Kiel started her podcast in 2018 as a general-interest interview show, but after receiving an autism diagnosis in 2022, she shifted her focus to neurodiversity. Carolyn finds joy and clarity in talking with other neurodivergent people and connecting deeply with the stories they share.

When she's not podcasting, Carolyn is a full-time instructional designer with 10+ years of experience designing employee learning & development programs. She has a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Industrial/Organizational Psychology. Before starting her podcast, Carolyn was also an a cappella singer who performed at venues across the New York City metro area. Her a cappella group actually helped introduce her to podcasts when her friend shared a podcast episode with her about one of the songs they liked to sing (the "Hallelujah" episode of Revisionist History).

National Autism Acceptance Month, celebrated throughout April, promotes awareness, inclusion, and acceptance for autistic individuals. Initiated by the Autism Society over 50 years ago, it focuses on fostering understanding, providing resources, and advocating for the rights of the over seven million autistic Americans, shifting from "awareness" to "acceptance" to promote true inclusion. 

 The initiative aims to shift from simply raising awareness to fostering acceptance, celebrating the strengths and contributions of the autistic community, and advocating for necessary services.
