Sarah moved into the Victorian-style house on the outskirts of Blackwood seeking silence, but the house had its own voice. It started as a rhythmic scratching behind the bedroom wallpaper, which she dismissed as mice. However, as the weeks passed, the sound evolved. It wasn’t the frantic clawing of a rodent; it was the slow, deliberate sound of fingernails dragging across wood, moving in sync with her footsteps as she walked down the hallway.

One night, the scratching stopped. In the absolute silence of the 3:00 a.m. darkness, a breathy, distorted voice drifted through the floorboards. It spoke her name—not in a shout, but in a dry, rattling hiss. Sarah froze, her heart hammering against her ribs. She pressed her ear to the wall, trying to convince herself it was the wind. Instead, she heard a soft, wet thud from inside the drywall, followed by a terrifyingly human giggle.

She grabbed a hammer, driven by a frantic need to see what was nesting in her home. With one heavy swing, she smashed through the plaster. The wall was hollow, but it wasn't empty. Tucked into the narrow space between the studs was a collection of Polaroid photos, all taken from the corner of her ceiling while she slept. Beneath the photos lay a small, hand-knitted blanket she had lost weeks ago, still warm to the touch.

A cold draft hit the back of her neck. She realized the scratching hadn't come from the wall in front of her, but from the darkness of the open closet behind her. As she turned, the closet door slowly creaked shut from the inside, and a thin, pale hand reached out to click the lock. Sarah didn't stay to see the face. She ran, leaving the house behind, but even now, in her new apartment, she sometimes hears a familiar, rhythmic scratching coming from the other side of the headboard.
