Someone Is Watching -Chapter 4

Shadows in Desire

By Rosalina JanePublished about 12 hours ago 4 min read

The apartment felt smaller than ever. The rain had stopped completely, leaving a thin mist over the city, but inside, Elena could feel the weight of Adrian’s presence pressing in on her from every direction.

She sat on the edge of the sofa, trying to steady her shaking hands. Her mind screamed at her to flee, to scream, to tear herself away from him. Yet, with each quiet movement he made, each soft tilt of his head, each brush of his fingers against hers as he picked up a photo, her pulse betrayed her.

It was confusing. Impossible. She hated him. He had watched her, manipulated her, erased her friends, shaped her life without consent — and yet… she felt something else. A spark. A pull she couldn’t name.

Adrian crouched in front of her, close enough that the warmth of his presence brushed against her knees. “You feel it, don’t you?” His voice was gentle, almost tender, the kind of tone that made her skin crawl and ache all at once.

“I… I don’t know what you mean,” she said, trying to pull back, but a small part of her didn’t want to.

“Don’t lie,” he said softly. “I can feel it in you. The same thing I feel for you. That confusion, that pull, that… curiosity. You can fight it, but you won’t win.”

Her chest tightened. “You’re insane,” she whispered. “You’ve ruined everything, and you… and I…”

He reached forward, not aggressively, not violently, but deliberately, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His fingers were cold, controlled, precise — and somehow that touch ignited something inside her she wanted to deny.

Elena’s eyes widened. Her heart raced, a mixture of panic and… desire. She shook her head violently. “No. No! This isn’t real! This isn’t… possible!”

Adrian’s lips curved into a faint, knowing smile. “Why do you resist what’s already true?”

“I don’t… I don’t want this,” she said, her voice breaking.

“I know,” he whispered, leaning just slightly closer. “You’re afraid. But you can’t fight it, can you?”

Her stomach twisted. It was true. She didn’t want this. She hated him. And yet, every time he spoke her name, every time he moved with that calm inevitability, she felt drawn in, inexplicably, dangerously.

Adrian’s gaze softened, and for a moment, Elena almost forgot the terror, almost forgot the danger. He wasn’t screaming, he wasn’t threatening — he was simply… present. Intense. Magnetic.

“Why do you do this to me?” she whispered. “Why are you like this?”

“Because you are the only one who ever mattered,” he said softly. “Because everything else — everyone else — fades away when you’re here. When you’re mine.”

Elena felt herself recoil, yet a tiny part of her wanted to lean closer. The thought horrified her. She hated him. And yet… she wanted him to stay.

He leaned back just enough to give her space but not enough to let her feel safe. “I don’t demand this,” he said quietly. “I only observe. You decide how you feel. And soon, you’ll realize it’s not just fear you feel.”

She looked at him, heart racing, mind spinning. “Not just… fear?”

“No,” he murmured. “Something darker. Something sharper. Something that scares you because you shouldn’t feel it. But you do.”

Her chest tightened. She wanted to leave. She wanted to scream. And yet, as she watched him, as she felt his presence close, a strange warmth spread through her — confusing, terrifying, undeniable.

Adrian stood and walked slowly around the room, calm, controlled, as if the apartment itself bent to his will. “You think you can fight what’s already in your blood,” he said softly. “But every glance you give me, every shiver, every heartbeat… tells me the truth.”

Elena’s hands clenched her knees. “You’re… impossible,” she whispered.

“Perhaps,” he said, stopping in front of her again, close enough that she could feel his breath. “But you can’t deny it. And one day, you won’t try.”

Her chest heaved. She hated him. She feared him. And yet, somewhere deep, she wanted him. She hated herself for it, and that hatred made the attraction burn brighter.

Adrian crouched once more, eyes locked on hers. “You’ve spent your life thinking you were safe. That someone would protect you. That you could choose. But I’m the only one who’s ever been here. The only one who’s ever seen you completely.”

Her throat tightened. “I don’t… I don’t understand.”

“You will,” he whispered. “And when you do, you’ll know. You’ll know that all your fear, all your anger… was just the beginning of something far more real.”

Her mind spun. Everything about him screamed danger, but everything about him drew her closer. She didn’t want this. She couldn’t want this. And yet, as he extended his hand slowly toward her, a silent invitation, she felt herself trembling, torn between instinct and something darker.

Adrian’s smile was faint, almost tender. “Fear is temporary. Desire… desire lingers.”

Elena swallowed hard, heart pounding. She hated him. She feared him. And yet… she wanted him to stay. She wanted him closer. She wanted to understand what it was about him that made her blood sing even as her mind screamed danger.

The room was silent, save for the soft hum of the city outside. And in that silence, Elena realized something terrifying: the cage wasn’t just around her body. It was around her heart. And Adrian had the key.
