My Ex Keeps Showing Up in Photos
By: Inkmouse
My ex and I broke up three weeks before Valentine’s Day.
It wasn’t quiet. It wasn’t mutual.
It was the kind of breakup where things get thrown, voices get loud, and the last thing he says before leaving is something that sticks in your head long after the door slams.
His name was Aaron.
And the last thing he said to me was:
“Don’t worry. I’ll still be around.”
At the time, I thought it was just a bitter comment.
Something people say when they’re angry.
Now I wish that was all it was.

The first photo happened by accident.
I was out with friends at a bar trying to forget the breakup. My friend Kayla insisted we take a selfie for Instagram.
We were both smiling, leaning close together, neon lights behind us.
I posted it and forgot about it.
Later that night, I opened the photo again to check the comments.
That’s when I saw him.
Aaron.
Standing behind us in the background.
It took me a second to notice because he was partially hidden behind another group at the bar.
But once I saw him, I couldn’t unsee it.
He was looking directly at the camera.
Smiling.
Not a normal smile.
The kind where the mouth curves up but the eyes stay completely still.
My stomach dropped.
Because Aaron hadn’t been at that bar.
I would have seen him.
I zoomed in on the picture.
The lighting was dim, but it was definitely him.
Same dark hoodie.
Same messy hair.
Same smile.
I texted Kayla.
Was Aaron at the bar tonight?
She replied instantly.
No? Why?
I didn’t answer.
I just deleted the photo.

The second photo was taken two days later.
I was walking through a park near my apartment and stopped to take a picture of the frozen lake.
It was quiet.
Empty.
No one around.
Just gray winter sky and snow along the edges of the water.
I didn’t even look at the photo after taking it.
Until that night.
I was scrolling through my camera roll when I noticed something strange.
A shape near the trees in the distance.
I zoomed in.
My chest tightened.
Aaron was standing there.
Half hidden behind a tree.
Far away from the camera.
But still clearly visible.
And again…
He was smiling.
The exact same smile.
My hands started shaking.
Because I knew for a fact there was no one in that park when I took the picture.

I blocked his number again after that.
Blocked every account I knew he had.
Changed my privacy settings.
Told myself maybe it was coincidence.
Maybe he really had been nearby.
Maybe I just didn’t notice him.
But then the third photo happened.

It was Valentine’s Day.
I was determined not to spend it thinking about Aaron.
So I stayed in, ordered takeout, and tried to relax.
Around 10 p.m., I took a picture of my cat sleeping on the couch.
Just a cute little photo.
Soft lamp light.
Blanket.
Cat curled up.
I smiled when I took it.
Then I looked closer.
And my stomach dropped so hard I thought I might throw up.
In the reflection of the TV screen behind the couch…
Aaron was standing in my living room.
Behind me.
His head slightly tilted.
Still smiling.
My hands went numb.
I turned around instantly.
The room was empty.
No one there.
Doors locked.
Windows closed.
I checked every room in the apartment.
Closet.
Bathroom.
Kitchen.
Nothing.
But the photo was still there.
Clear as day.
Aaron standing behind me.
Smiling.

I stopped taking pictures after that.
I didn’t want to see him again.
But tonight something happened that I can’t explain.
I was deleting old photos from my phone when I noticed something strange.
A photo I don’t remember taking.
The timestamp says 3:12 a.m.
I was asleep then.
The image is dark.
Blurry.
Taken inside my bedroom.
My heart started pounding when I zoomed in.
The photo shows my bed.
I’m lying there asleep.
And standing beside the bed…
Is Aaron.
Much closer now.
Close enough that I can see every detail of his face.
His eyes look wider than they should.
His smile stretched too far.
Like his skin is being pulled tight.
And his hand…
Is reaching toward me.
But the worst part isn’t the picture.
It’s the next photo in my camera roll.
Because I definitely didn’t take that one either.
This one is a close-up.
Just Aaron’s face.
Right next to mine.
Both of us in the frame.
Me still asleep.
And him smiling wider than ever.
Underneath the photo, typed in the caption field, are five words I never wrote.
“See? I told you I’d stay.”
